  While the initial costs of purchasing and installing a system are higher than the traditional fossil fuel burners, the expenses are easily recouped because of its high efficiency.  Most Geothermal systems range from $6.00 to $9.00 per square foot of living space, depending on the size and options of the compressing unit, field loops, and air handler.  Also effectng the cost is house size, elevation, earth soil temperature, house orientation, and the quality of the house insulation, doors, windows, and other building materials.. 


  Heat Source Comparison
 
When comparing the costs of  various sources of energy such as propane, fuel oil, natural gas, and electricity, all units are compared to the cost of  (1) therm (100,000 B.T.U.'s).  The following fuels have the approximate heat content:


Propane (LPG)--- 90,000 B.T.U.'s/gal
Fuel Oil 138,000 B.T.U.'s/gal
Natural gas 100,000 B.T.U.'s/therm (sold per therm)
Electricity 3,413 B.T.U.;s/kWh 


In order to calculate the cost of useful heat, or heat that is actually delivered to the house we must adjust of the efficiency of the heat unit as well as the cost of the fuel.

The following demonstrates the cost per therm for a high efficiency:
 (95%) propane furnace, with propane having a cost  $1.90/gal.
100,000 (B.T.U.;s pr therm)/90,000 (B.T.U.'s/gal=1.11 gallons per therm.
1.11 gal. x $1.90 per gal.=$2.11 per therm
$2.11/.95 (efficiency) =$2.22 per usuable therm.

  Electric/Geothermal

  The following demonstrates the cost per therm for a goethermal heat pump having a C.O.P. (efficiency) of 400%, and electricity cost of .075  cents per kWh:


  29.3 (kWhrs per therm) x .075 per kWh = $2.20 per therm.
$2.20/4 (efficiency) = .55 cents per therm.
In conclusion, .55 per therm (for geothermal)/$2.22 for propane =.2477
100% - .2477 =75% efficiency.
